I woke early to spend the day with my mum & fam friends for the Bellewood Acres Labor Day classic car show. Bellewood Acres is one of the largest u-pick apple orchards in Washington. In a big operation at the foot of the orchard is this foodie barn full of sassy panini's, vodka lemonades, cheese & meat plates, homemade pies & ice cream. There's a vodka distillery within, where you can sample Raspberry infused & Honeycrisp vodka, as well as Gin & Eau de Vie distilled onsite, for free from the owner herself. I was looking at the cars with a group of real weirdos. No moment was without laughter. I was trying to help this 10-yr-old climb up this gigantic tractor tire but ended up just shoving him face first onto the thing. My mum started hitting on old classic car show guys. There were two old prissy dogs riding around in a baby stroller. We sampled apple slices & pickled beets. Watched a bee fly into a jar of oil where it petrified itself to death. An aside: Was anyone as mesmerized by the scene in Jurassic Park when he finds a mosquito preserved in tree amber? Ever since I saw that I've always wanted my own piece of petrified animal in resin as a keepsake jewelry piece. Why was that so memorable?
I was exhausted & introspective, but the vehicles were exciting, symbols of a more classic time; a different aesthetic, less hyped up on more more more, more about lines & the experiences or the stories to be shared within, i.e. a family camping trip, a picnic in the park, taking the yorkies for a ride...yes, yeah, today's vehicles offer the same motive storyboards, but, to me, this is a time of trying to trick us into believing in the stories, and less about actually living it. It's a time of appearing to be happy instead of finding what truly makes you.
